Who we are

Because He First Loved Us exists to see newcomer families find healing, hope and home here in Utah!

Because He First Loved Us is a relational ministry to newcomer families meeting spiritual, educational, mental and practical needs through mentoring and resource networking. Our goal is to educate, encourage and influence newcomer families as they strive to succeed in their new life here in the Utah. Our approach is more than just providing services or meeting practical needs. We build personal relationships with children and their families as we live life together. Our programming has included tutoring, mentoring, sports team, involvement in the arts and special events. We also come along side parents to help empower and educate them as they navigate parenting, acquire jobs and support their children in a new cultural context.

The pandemic exposed the growing mental health crisis in our country. Although our newcomer friends demonstrate incredible resilience as they navigate their traumatic pasts and the challenges of settling in a new country, they are at high risk for depression, anxiety, complex PTSD and other mental health challenges. They also face huge obstacles in accessing needed resources and care. In addition, unique cultural stigmas and shame surrounding mental health issues silences those who realize they need help. We have observed that women and children in the community are especially at risk and have the least ability to get these desperately needed resources. This is why we are pivoting the majority of our time, attention, and resources to meeting these needs.

Through our Let the Children Come program, we will provide resources and support through emotional and mental health education, book clubs, and arts programs. We will also work to match children with mentors and tutors, as well as connecting these youth with professional resources as needed. Our Hagar's Hope program invites newcomer women into a safe and gentle relational environment where they can find acceptance and genuine connection. We provide weekly connect groups where access to basic mental and emotional health education, personal coping skills, strategies and resources will be shared and friendships will flourish. We will provide quarterly healing weekends in a retreat format where volunteer mental health professionals, coaches, and art therapists provide teaching and hands-on learning. And we will work to raise funds for those who are not able to access proper treatment due to financial hardship.

Another goal of ours is to bring awareness to the community at large of the needs of these precious new friends. We want to inspire and ultimately motivate others into action. This community belongs to each and every one of us. We should all care about one another and help each other succeed.

Please join us in being a part of the solution!

Mentor a Child or Teen

Be a big brother or big sister to one of our amazing kids. Or just get to know a new friend your own age. The commitment level can vary. It's as simple as making a friend and hanging out :-) Do you like to watch movies, go to the park, play sports or just chill with friends?

Then this is perfect for you!!

Partner With an Adult

Make a new friend from another part of the world. The commitment level can vary. A lot of the adults want to improve their English skills, many of them are working on their citizenship, some are working on a drivers license and some of them just need a friend to walk with them through this new life.

Get involved today, change a life forever!
